Pedagogic orientation workshops for Chinese learners - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

This session explains the rationale behind and content of participative workshops on pedagogic values and relations now adopted as policy across all post-graduate programmes at Sheffield University Management School. It aims to accelerate the adjustment international students make to the pedagogic culture in higher education in the UK. This transitioning initiative arose originally from the author's role as a director of a large programme in which Chinese students formed over 90% of the cohort. He consulted the student body and alumni over the challenges and issues they confronted to develop a pilot workshop which was ultimately refined through feedback and further research into the ‘study skills’ workshops now delivered by all post-graduate programme directors. An important feature of the workshop designed is its interactive nature which also helps to build trust in the teacher-student relation.
