The research and development work on external examining in 2004 was a joint initiative led by the Higher Education Academy with the support and encouragement of Universities UK Standing Conference of Principals the Association of Colleges and the Quality Assurance Agency. Members of the External Examiners Working Group contributed personal accounts of their experiences as external examiners. These formed a pilot to the main study to gain feedback from examiners on their perceptions of the role and their engagement with it. Examples of these accounts below formed the basis of an analytical account of the processes of external examining and perceived needs of external examiners.
