The R Project in Statistical Computing

R is an Open Source environment for statistical computing and graphics ‘not unlike’ version 3 of the S system developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T now Lucent) which is the basis of the commercial system S-PLUS® 1 from the Insightful Corporation. This article describes the R philosophy and current status: it is definitely not a review as the author is a member of the R core team as well as the S-PLUS Advisory Board.
