Raising awareness on mental health difficulties

Drama students at West College Scotland and Choose Life

Final year BA (Hons) Drama students at West College Scotland worked in partnership with  the organisation Choose Life to create a unique piece of theatre that addressed the issue of suicide for a student audience. The aim of the piece was to raise awareness, to get people talking about the subject and to educate them both about some of the myths surrounding suicide and about the help that is available to them. A member of staff from Choose Life advised and worked with the performance students throughout the process and supported the workshop after the performance in terms of introducing the support mechanisms and answering questions.

The piece created was informed by research and this was then transformed into a dramatic narrative using movement, dialogue and music. The result was a highly effective and engaging performance.

The resulting evaluation forms completed by the student audience demonstrated that Choose Life and the performer’s aims of educating and raising awareness had been successfully realised.
