In the 2015/16 academic year, 7685 staff working in UK higher education (HE) identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or other – this constituted 5.2% of all staff who disclosed their sexual orientation.
Although we now know more about the sexual orientation of staff working in HE, as disclosure rates for sexual orientation continue to increase year-on-year, it is important to ask what data can actually tell us about the experiences of staff who do not identify as heterosexual.
In ECU’s first Research Insight, Dr Kevin Guyan uses qualitative data from staff who disclosed as lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) in the 2016 version of the Athena Survey of Science, Engineering and Technology (ASSET) to examine LGB staff experiences in UK HE.
Research Insight are short summary reports of recent research undertaken by ECU’s research team. Further information on using data and evidence is available here.
