Southampton Solent University - Developing an “employability in the curriculum” dashboard - Strategic Excellence Initiative

What the project is?

Southampton Solent University (SSU) has pursued a strategy of embedding employability in the curriculum for the past three years.

This approach is based on an innovative model of employability which draws on the literature of sociology (Bourdieu) and education (Fugate) which locates the idea of employability in the development of capital. Three forms of capital are identified, human, social and psychological. This model is called the Solent Capital Compass Model of Employability. Further to the development of the initial model, an employability self-evaluation test (ESE) test was developed as the first part of a toolkit to evaluate and improve the pedagogies of employability for the curriculum.

The focus of the strategic excellence initiative will be to take the learning that we have developed from the initial model, and from the creation and use of the ESE test, to put the toolkits and resources that are available to evaluate and support a curriculum that enhance employability

What the project hopes to achieve?

The successful project will build on all the data by designing the methodologies for curriculum mapping, industrial surveys and incorporate longitudinal DLHE.  We will present this data, alongside the already organised ESE data in the Solent Employability Dashboard at a pilot level. It will integrate all these data sets into an easy to interpret visual format.

By the end of this project we aim to have:

  • Created a pilot version of this dashboard and populated it with real data for a selected number of courses.
  • Beta-Tested the dashboard with a cohort of course leaders
  • Disseminated the project internally in order to gain wider institutional buy-in.
