Teaching social legacy management through a 'stepped case study' approach

A chapter from the HEA's publication Enhancing education for sustainable development in Business and Management Hospitality Leisure Marketing Tourism.

The hosting by London of the 2012 Olympic Games and in particular the social legacy impacts that are beginning to emerge from this have afforded events management a contemporary teaching topic. Every day fresh critical news reports are being written in relation to the legacies of the Games. This is a great opportunity to use a large-scale case study to help facilitate students’ understanding of social legacy management. This chapter explains how to use a case study approach by examining examples of the former ‘residents’ of the Olympic Park in London each group being impacted in different ways. In the workshops held students were able to examine pictures and data available from studies and visits made between 2006 and 2012 to many of these communities in east London.
