Videos for learning and teaching

For students to be transformed into efficient learners one must be aware of several points: Firstly the presentation of topics must motivate students to engage with the subject. Secondly learning is no longer restricted to lectures. Lastly high-quality feedback is essential for effective learning. In my academic practice I have attempted to address these important issues by using and creating videos for teaching. To provide students with the opportunity to learn outside formal learning sessions I record all my lectures; and produce video clips which cover difficult topics in a ‘Khan Academy-style’ approach. The files of the recordings are directly uploaded onto my YouTube channel which has attracted over 900 subscribers with over 400 000 views worldwide. To give students are more comprehensive and personal feedback I use screen-recording software to create video clips of model answers. These recordings directly address the student and give clear individual feedback. Students said that it is the personal ‘touch’ of the recording and the direct addressing of problems that they value the most.
In this report I describe how my use of videos for teaching has developed. I also discuss how using and creating videos can be implemented in different teaching scenarios. Lastly I give a brief overview of suitable video creation tools.
