HE professionals at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University embrace updated Professional Standards Framework to deliver excellent teaching

14 Jun 2023 | Advance HE Academics at Taiwan’s National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) have welcomed the updated Professional Standards Framework (PSF) after taking part in webinars led by Advance HE.

Some sixty higher education professionals, mostly Advance HE Fellows, from NYCU in Taipei and Hsinchu have ensured they have an in-depth understanding of the updated Professional Standards Framework after completing a two-part workshop delivered by Advance HE.

They will now use their detailed knowledge to help colleagues across the institution who may be considering applying for Advance HE Fellowship. The Higher Education Accreditation for Teaching (HEAT) team in the institution are also in the process of mapping their professional learning opportunities to the revised framework, to ensure it is embedded in the training they offer in the future.

The University in Taiwan has been working with Advance HE for more than five years and, with more than 100 Fellows, its academics and professional support staff have an outstanding track-record of embracing global standards in higher education.

“NYCU has worked consistently with us over the years to ensure it is a true front-runner among higher educational institutions worldwide to embrace internationally recognised global standards,” said Advance HE Head of International Membership, Ian Hall.

“That’s why it came as little surprise that it was one of the first institutions in the region that we’ve worked with to embed the newly updated Professional Standards Framework in its work.”

The first webinar focussed on preparing NYCU’s Fellowship mentors for the new PSF with the second webinar focussed around core knowledge and professional values.

The latest version of the Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education was launched in January 2023 following an in depth consultation with stakeholders worldwide. The revised framework was well received by staff within NYCU. For example, Professor Yu-An Lu, who is an Advance HE Senior Fellow and based in the university’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures said:

"I like how the new PSF incorporates collaboration and collegiality into its professional values (V5). It emphasizes the importance of working together and fostering a supportive and collaborative environment."

Professor Chia-Feng Lu, an Advance HE Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Imaging and Radiological Sciences, noted:

"The PSF 2023 framework definition has been made more concise and clear, allowing teachers to more clearly understand the desired impact of the framework. The updated version also places greater emphasis on collaboration with others in the teaching practice, facilitating teamwork and leading to broader reflection and improvement."

NYCU, based in the Taiwan capital of Taipei, as well as having multiple campuses in other cities, consistently ranks as one of the best universities in Taiwan and among the top 50 universities in Asia. The university prides itself on specialising in research across its varied colleges and it has been recognised by both the Taiwan government as well as research partners from all over the world. This research-driven approach has significantly benefitted the students at the university, who get to see the cutting edge of research, as well as teaching and learning.
