Adam is the first recipient of the American Association of Anatomists Basmajian Award who is based outside North America in its 32 year history. Incorporating novel technologies into his teaching has enabled him to bring anatomy teaching, clinical imaging and proficiency in use of medical imaging technologies together to improve learning experiences of students, as well as readying them for their clinical jobs.
Recognition of his teaching in creating an atmosphere that makes students excited, engaged and determined to learn is one of the highest accolades he feels he can achieve. The innovation of ultrasound in his teaching space and the resources being developed have aided student learning in his institution and beyond. Adam has integrated the Anatomage table into the curriculum for teaching and assessment. The practices have been shared and utilised at multiple international institutions.
Adam’s research into teaching and understanding how to learn anatomy has led to a focus on communicating science to the public; assessing their understanding of anatomy in order to improve learning and the health, well-being and public understanding. His pedagogic activities have led to large-scale collaborations and media pieces that have impacted globally on health and disease.
Adam is most proud of his student nominated awards and the positive feedback he receives from them. As an anatomist he has to teach all aspects of the human body; a vast depth and breadth of knowledge, the recognition of his excellence from students is a major factor of his enjoyment of his role. The fact that he can bring innovative technologies into his teaching space and transform their educational experience is gratifying, but more importantly the fact that this knowledge will be used to save a person’s life is extremely humbling.
