Job Title
Professor of Pedagogy in Politics

Emma Mayhew is an experienced Professor of Pedagogy with a passion for digital transformation and change. She has led a wide range of innovative work to enhance inclusive student learning environments including encouraging the development of academic communities, improving opportunities for the student voice to be heard and enabling staff-student partnerships.

Emma has been a passionate advocate of multi-media learning. This is reflected in her work creating a series of short, tailored videos to provide additional, 24/7 academic and pastoral support for students within her School. She has also helped to pioneer the use of screen capture technology to provide video feedback to enhance provision.

She led an inter-disciplinary team of researchers in a two-year project to support others within the University and across the sector to adopt and adapt new, freely available video technology. Most recently, Emma has co-led the University of Reading Electronic Management of Assessment Programme as Academic Director. This Programme included projects enabling the transition away from a pocketed approach to online assessment towards institution-wide adoption of online submission, feedback and grading. Of particular note is her work around the use of assessment analytics as one of the leads in the development of the University Student Progress Dashboard. This shows a series of screens visualising core attainment data in a range of graphics and how this progress compares to the goals that students can (optionally) set for themselves. Her work has had evidenced impact on student self-reflection around progress, student-motivated changes to assessment behaviour and enhanced staff-student conversations.

Emma has designed and facilitated leadership, project and change management training in the sector. She has delivered programmes focused, in particular, at early career leadership and provides mentorship within her institution and elsewhere to support women in leadership roles across the sector.
