Jayne Marshall is Foundation Professor of Midwifery, Lead Midwife for Education, Deputy Head of School of Healthcare and Director of Education at the University of Leicester. She has pioneered the development of a four-year Master in Science Midwifery with Leadership spiral curriculum that also prepares students to be future leaders of the midwifery profession, alongside building a faculty of midwifery academics.

Recognised as a national and international academic leader, Jayne has made substantial contributions to the development of midwifery education through designing innovative curricula and learning opportunities, work-based learning pedagogies and authentic assessment. She received a Gold Medal Award for midwifery excellence from the Chief Midwifery Officer for England in 2022.

Jayne was a member of the Council of Deans of Health (CoDH) Midwifery Advisory Board that informed the NMC (2019) Future Midwife Standards and coaches students undertaking the CoDH’s Student Leadership Programme. Jayne is an Advance HE Principal Fellow and a Fellow of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM).

While employed at the University of Nottingham, Jayne received a Lord Dearing Award for outstanding contribution to the development of teaching and student learning and the RCM’s Johnsons Baby Award for Excellence in Midwifery Education for the impact that embedding a work-based learning module in a BSc (Hons) in Midwifery Studies programme had on developing practising midwives and enhancing their career prospects.

As a compassionate leader, Jayne’s philosophy is to always empower students and colleagues to feel valued, respected and cared for, so they can reach their potential and perform their best. Through a range of initiatives, including mentoring, coaching and shadowing, Jayne supports their development within and outside her own institution, including developing a UK-wide mentoring scheme for the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s Lead Midwife for Education Strategic Reference Group.

These activities enable Jayne to nurture others through sharing her leadership expertise from a teaching-focused perspective. With a substantial publishing history, Jayne is co-editor of the seminal textbook for midwives, Myles Textbook for Midwives, which is sold in over 75 countries and has been adapted for use in Sub-Saharan Africa and translated into Korean and Greek.
