Dr Jane Illes

Job Title:
Lecturer, University of St Andrews 

Jane is an education-focused lecturer in the School of Medicine at the University of St Andrews and was Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the school from 2019-2021. Jane has been involved with Athena SWAN/Athena Swan (“Athena Swan”) since 2014. 

Jane has end-to-end experience of the Athena Swan process. From 2014 to 2018, Jane led the Athena Swan work at the University of Dundee where she was lead author of the successful institution Athena Swan award application (2017) and collaborated with clinical and non-clinical STEMM and AHSSBL academic schools on their gender equality work and various successful charter applications. Jane was elected as deputy then chair of the Scotland AS network (2016-2019) and continues to work closely with colleagues across the EDI community. She has regularly chaired Athena Swan assessment panels covering many subjects and at all levels and has provided advice and critical friend feedback on gender equality work and Athena Swan applications to various institutions and departments. 

Jane was appointed as an Athena Swan Charters Advisor in 2020 and was a member of the Athena Swan 4.0 Intersectionality working group (2020-2021).
