University Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, University of Dundee

As University Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, Jim is responsible for the strategic development and efficient and effective management of the University and the leadership of its Professional Services directorates.  As well as ensuring that the University meets its statutory and regulatory responsibilities, Jim oversees all high level legal and compliance affairs and is responsible for the provision of support and advice to the University Court and Senate, especially in relation to best practice in corporate governance.

As a member of the University Executive Group, Jim works with the Principal, Vice-Principals and other senior colleagues to deliver further improvements in the University’s academic and financial performance,  He has a particular responsibility for the provision of professional services to the University community that are of a high standard and represent value for money. 

Jim chairs a range of internal committees and working groups, including the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee, Health & Safety -Committee and Local Joint Committee with the Campus unions.  Externally he is Chair of Advanced Procurement for Universities & Colleges (APUC) Ltd, Convener of the Universities Scotland Secretaries’ Group and a member of the Scottish Committee of the Universities & Colleges Employers Association (UCEA).  He sits on the Audit Committee of the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).

A graduate of Liverpool and Stirling Universities, Jim started his career in University management at the University of Abertay Dundee in 1996, holding a succession of posts, culminating in his appointment as Academic Secretary & Registrar.  In 2005 he was appointed Director of Strategic Planning & Governance at the University of Stirling, taking on the role of Deputy University Secretary from 2007.  He has held his current position at the University of Dundee since 2009.
