Professor Carol Adams

Carol is Professor of Accounting at Durham University Business School in the UK and Founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal. She is one of the world’s most published and cited researchers in the field of sustainability accounting and reporting.

Carol's work focusses on changes in organisational systems, processes, and beliefs in adapting to sustainable development challenges and the role that reporting Standards and guidance have in helping or hindering that change.

Carol has led the development of sustainability reporting at a university and advised an asset owner, an asset manager and a major bank on impact reporting and broader corporate reporting. She has been involved in technical or governance work on corporate reporting with the IIRC, CDSB, AA100, UNDP, AASB and CIPFA and is author of the SDGD Recommendations. She is a former member and Chair of the GRI Stakeholder Council. Carol trained as a financial auditor to become a Chartered Accountant, being a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She is a British and Australian citizen and lives in Melbourne.
