Is the student interest all our interest?

Session Abstract - Jim Dickinson

In England the Office for Students requires that the governing body ensures that “all students have opportunities to engage with the governance of the provider”, and that this allows for a “range of perspectives to have influence”. This suggests getting beyond mere student membership of the governing body – already a problem when student members struggle to cope with the papers and culture of a position they will only be in post for for a year. This session will explore student participation in both meetings and governance more generally, asking what lessons might be learned from effective student practice for the benefit of university governance more generally.

The Governance Conference will take place on 28 November 2019 in London. Find out more.
