The Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) recognises and rewards collaborative work that has had a demonstrable impact on teaching and learning. Introduced in 2016, the scheme highlights the key role of teamwork in higher education. See the winning teams below.

CATE Winners - Edinburgh Napier University

The ‘Get on Board’ competency pathway places and supports students with boards of local charities, voluntary organisations and public bodies. They network with professionals and help make decisions which impact their community. The team supports with training, networking, mentoring and career guidance. In 2015, the pilot was awarded a Herald HE Award for Enhancing Student Learning.

We are a cross-discipline team responsible for developing the employability skills of Biomedical Science students. Bringing together a careers consultant, with learning technologists and media specialists, enables a holistic approach for equipping undergraduates with future-facing skills. A positive outcome has been a sustained increase in graduate-level employment for our students.

The E-Learning Unit in the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics promotes using technology to support the teaching and learning of mathematics in the School, University and wider community through collaborative initiatives and innovations. This includes the Numbas e-assessment software and the Coursebuilder tool for creating accessible mathematics learning material.

The National Software Academy Team works collaboratively with numerous industry partners to deliver an innovative Project-based Learning approach and many meaningful opportunities for student-industry interaction. This provides a distinctive student experience that enhances the employability of students, as they build a portfolio of client-facing projects to showcase their skills.

As ‘Agents for the Common Good’ we transformed the learning for our Physiotherapy students through a four-way collaboration with community partners, health service users, students and academics. This partnership impacted positively on the health of thousands of services users in Greater Glasgow, and metamorphosed all partners beyond instrumental commitments towards empowering experiences.

Sync the City is a very successful pedagogical tool to teach students digital business, innovation and entrepreneurship before they graduate, working alongside participants from tech sector organisations. Students engage in an intense experience, learn new skills, and put into practice many of the theoretical concepts learned during their degrees.

Our Assessment Centre Experience (ACE) is a collaboration between key stakeholders which supports students who may not have the social and cultural capital to navigate recruitment processes. Delivered via embedded modules in the curriculum to over 3,000 students from across nine academic schools, it has a positive impact on employability.

MetMUnch is a global award-winning, student-led social enterprise based at Manchester Metropolitan University. At its heart is a passion for sustainable and nutritious food – and sharing that passion with students, staff, local businesses and communities. MetMUnch run a range of sessions, from on-the-spot nutritional advice, to leading on fun, interactive activities and science focussed workshops.

Interprofessional collaboration between the Centre for Learning and Teaching and the Academic Quality and Development Unit manifests in the identification, harvesting and dissemination of good practices in learning, teaching and assessment, grounded in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Dissemination is through an online repository and joint delivery of professional development and international conferences.

The Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre (QMLAC) is a long-term collaboration between staff, students, volunteer barristers and solicitors and our local community. This clinical legal education initiative mixes the theory of law with the practice of client and community work, in a mechanism that enables a maximum output for the inputted resource.
