The University of Nottingham, European Junior Leadership Academy (reLAte) team is a vibrant group of academics, learning technologists, professional staff and students who have participated in this exciting collaboration to bring to life the European Junior Leadership Academy.
The University of Nottingham (United Kingdom), team consists of Stacy Johnson, Professor Carol Hall, Dr Ada Hui, Professor Heather Wharrad, Kirstie Coolin, Lydia Jones, Michael Taylor, George Gadd (of the HELM team), Bethany York, Annu Verma, Mara Sprengel, Gavin Hibberd-Smith and Sala Khulumula and the wider project team incudes staff from University of Maribor (Slovenia), Trinity College Dublin (Republic of Ireland), and Lisbon Nursing School (Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Lisboa) Portugal. The CATE claim focuses on the UK team using relationships with project partners to instantiate excellence in collaborative working.
Impact of work
The EJLA team has supported 45 European student nurses and midwives to develop their leadership identity early in their career journey. Students have participated in leadership retreats which included innovative pedagogical methods including drama and team building exercises with the armed forces. These leadership development methods have been introduced into mainstream curricula in the four partner institutions demonstrating broad impact. The EJLA also included policy internships in Portugal, Slovenia, Ireland and England and students have benefited from being mentored by senior healthcare leaders.
Plans for the future
The team is now poised to deliver a Massive Online Open Course Lead Now! The MOOC seeks to democratise leadership by giving student nurses and midwives from all over the world free, open access to a contemporary leadership development programme designed to help them to lead at the start of their career journey. In spring of 2019, the team is hosting a summit of 100 European student leaders.
