Student voice, experience and outcomes
It is paramount that institutions develop the structures, procedures and approaches to place the student at the centre of all activity. With increased regulation, and the TEF mandatory in England, institutions need to demonstrate their commitment to the student through tangible data-driven measures, as well as to remain competitive. Institutions must balance priorities such as mainstreaming innovative teaching, ensuring student engagement and retention with the aim of maximising the experiences and outcomes for all students.

Teaching Skills Masterclasses
The Teaching Skills Masterclass offers a flexible and evidence-based solution for the development of university-level teachers. It is aimed at introducing staff to new approaches in teaching and learning in higher education.
To support institutions in adapting to the 'new normal' created by the Covid-19 crisis, we have developed the programme to help staff to engage in online teaching methods, as well as offering the option to explore teaching in HE more generally.
Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (CLTHE)
A focused development programme for academic staff promoting a practice-based understanding of effective teaching in higher education. The Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education is Advance HE’s flagship teacher development programme, modelled on programmes delivered globally including at institutions in the UK, Africa, Asia, Australasia and Europe. It offers a flexible, evidence-based and sustainable solution for the development of university-level teachers.
Teaching Excellence Programme (TEP)
Advance HE’s Teaching Excellence Programme supports, develops and inspires excellence in teaching.
Aimed at experienced academic staff, the programme combines a series of interactive masterclasses with a coaching programme, offering participants the space and time to critically reflect on their practice.
The interactive nature of the programme brings together theory, knowledge from the sector and practical ideas for change that can be applied to the participants’ practice.
Supporting the success of Access and Participation Plans (APPs)
We focus on working with you as a critical friend and informed partner to enhance and reflect on your approach to inclusion across the student lifecycle. We recognise however that the new APP approach – centred on long-term targets, an evaluation culture, and a focus on ambitious engagement with issues such as ‘race’ equity, disability, and social mobility – presents complex challenges which may need specific support to tackle.
Advance HE Endorsed

Advance HE ‘Endorsed’ status is awarded to higher education institutions (HEIs) or organisations who work with HEIs which provide resources that support student employability.
Receiving ‘Endorsed’ status demonstrates commitment to ensuring an integrated and accessible way for students to engage with employability highlighting that engagement with the resource offers strong preparation for success, either through postgraduate study or beyond higher education into employment. Through alignment with Advance HE’s strategic framework you can focus your resource to provide maximum gains, ultimately for the betterment of your students.
Student surveys

Student surveys from Advance HE (Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey - PTES, Postgraduate Research Experience Survey - PRES and the UK Engagement Survey - UKES) have engaged with more than 170,000 students over the last two years. If you are an Advance HE member your institution can benefit from the discounted (reduced to just £2,500) data and insights from these to:
- understand and enhance the student academic experience and student engagement at course, faculty and institution-wide levels
- benchmark performance year-on-year within your institution and ranking in comparison to your peers
- pinpoint where interventions are most needed for student success in your priority areas, including assessment and feedback, employability and student retention.
Additional insight and benchmarking reports can be purchased. Whether you are a course leader, Head of Department, Faculty Dean or Vice-Chancellor / President, these reports enable you to interrogate your annual results and gain invaluable insights for enhancement and genuine competitive advantage.

Case studies
We have worked with a number of institutions to support student success in their contexts:
- Developing Institutional Capability in Inclusive Assessment - SOAS
- National Collaborative Medical School Assessment and Feedback Project
"For me, a highlight of the process was the inclusive assessment labs. Reviewing our programme at a concrete level with colleagues in my department enabled me to understand how these different processes could come together and be utilised for the benefit of our department, the programme and students.”
Satoshi Miyamura, Senior Lecturer and Learning & Teaching Coordinator at the SOAS Department of Economics
