The guidance includes information on:
- Background to the guidance
- The benefits of adopting a strategic approach to EIA
- EIA and the law in Scotland
- A model for approaching strategic EIA
- Signposting of information for particular groups of institutional staff (see below)
- Practical tools and resources
The guidance has been devised to enable users to directly access areas of interest; there are also some suggested prompts where particular information may be of more relevance to specific types of staff.
EIA is an activity that should not be undertaken in isolation, nor by one member of staff alone. It should be undertaken by teams of relevant staff with an interest in and knowledge of the area of work, policy and practice, where collective and pooled expertise enables more effective decision making. Institutions may therefore find it helpful to cascade the link to this guidance to a range of staff within their college or university, to support a shared understanding of the key issues in undertaking EIA at a strategic level and to provide access to the practical tools available.
