Staffordshire University - Leading excellence in attainment and positive action - Strategic Excellence Initiative

What the project is?

LEAP (Leading Excellence in Attainment and Positive Action) is a cross-University project designed to reduce the attainment gap between White and BAME students within the University. Acknowledging that this is complex area this project is multi-stranded incorporating a number of different work-streams. These involve a wide range of staff in various job-roles focusing on specific aspects which they can either influence or improve. In combination it is hoped that all of these projects and people will make a collective contribution to narrowing the attainment gap. Indeed it is our strong belief that everyone can do something!

What the project hopes to achieve?

This project is designed to provide an integrated framework. Typically this is occurring through:

  • The coordination of a staff-student BAME focus group scheduled to meet 5 times a year
  • The introduction of BAME advocates within each Faculty to galvanise support and engagement from a wide range of staff and students
  • The introduction of a LEAP newsletter to keep staff informed
  • The design and development of unconscious bias training across different staff groups
  • The use of self-assessment checklists within curriculum areas to promote inclusive practice
  • Raising the profile of BAME visiting speakers as role models for student advancement and aspiration
