Working with the Teachers' Standards in Initial Teacher Education

This document articulates a coherent view of the expectations of new teachers at the point of recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status and entry to the profession.

Working with the Teachers' Standards in Initial Teacher Education has been produced by the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET) and the National Association of School Based Teacher Trainers (NASBTT) in collaboration with The Higher Education Academy (HEA).

It offers guidance for making assessments against the new standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England. From the beginning of September all teachers will be assessed against the Teachers' Standards which have replaced the current Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status.

All trainee teachers recommended for QTS must meet all of the standards set out by the DfE which are included in the publication. These include having high expectations and teaching lessons which inspire motivate and challenge pupils and demonstrating good subject and curriculum knowledge.
