Naomi is a diagnostic radiographer with over 22 years’ experience. Naomi has a passion for trauma radiography, initially working in Nottingham University Hospital Trust. Here she specialised as a musculoskeletal reporting radiographer. Naomi moved to the Highlands in 2008, becoming the first reporting radiographer and supporting the education of other radiographers to take on this advanced practice. She was promoted to superintendent in 2010, providing leadership to staff working across 5 sites in the Highlands. Her passion for teaching medical students image interpretation resulted in a move into academia in 2013.

At Robert Gordon University, Naomi held module leadership roles and gained Advance HE Fellowship. Here Naomi first used simulation-based education (SBE), introducing the use of moulage into the curriculum. Naomi was recognised for this innovative practice and awarded the Alan Nicholls award for best proffered paper at UK Imaging and Oncology conference by the Society of Radiographers.

Naomi moved to the University of Derby and took up leadership of the MSc (pre-reg) Diagnostic Radiography programme between 2016 and 2019. Alongside this she continued to provide module leadership responsibilities across the MSc and BSc programme. In 2018 Naomi was awarded ‘Lecturer of the year’ for her innovation, integration of SBE into the curriculum, staff training and contribution to improving the student experience. In 2021, she took up leadership of the BSc Diagnostic Radiography programme, where she has built capacity by developed simulation packages to replace clinical placement hours.

Naomi’s passion for simulated practice continues and the use of moulage and simulation to provide first-year students with experiences seeing open wounds ahead of clinical placement became the focus of her doctorate. This has resulted in several publications and invitations to speak at international conferences. Naomi is the simulation and research cluster lead and chairs both the Health, Psychology and Social care college simulation group and the Society of Radiographers Simulation specialist interest group. Naomi has worked with the HEE to support the development of a National framework for SBE. In these roles Naomi promotes a culture of sharing evidence-based practice and strives to improve student preparedness and patient-centred care through her work.
