Senior HE leaders need to be able to engage with both strategic and financial issues, but without sufficient familiarity with this complex area, it can be difficult to confidently lead and make informed decisions.
Developing the financial literacy of executive/ senior managers
The challenges and choices now facing HE have never been more complex. Senior and executive leaders need to be able to lead with an advanced level of financial acumen, enabling them to successfully navigate financial resourcing issues, improve strategic level decision making and implement the right solutions across their institutions. Our Strategic Finance Programme equips leaders with these skills and insights via coverage of such topics as: financial strategy; analysing and understanding accounts; business and resource planning; understanding key sources of university funding and the risks and opportunities of alternative funding options; and a range of operating models including overseas partnerships.
The overall course has given me greater understanding and ability to understand the accounts and accounting process which will allow me to be more involved and engaged in some the financial planning details."
Alistair Finlay, Faculty Director of Operations, Queen's University Belfast
Who is Strategic Finance Programme for?
The Strategic Finance Programme is for senior higher education leaders in universities and higher education colleges who will need to engage with the strategic issues as much as the financial ones and in a position where they are able to implement what is covered on the programme.
The programme has been designed for Senior and executive leaders in universities and HE colleges who engage with the financial impact of strategic decision making. Ideally participants will be Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Pro Vice-Chancellors, Heads of Professional Services, and Directors.
How is the programme delivered
SFP is an open programme delivered in a cohort structure. Now re-designed as an immersive three-day module with self-directed e-learning prior to the start. This programme is led by a highly experienced facilitator and expert in strategic finance.
Delivery will be a mixture of:
• Whole group input supported by coaching and peer learning
• Individual and group work around financial scenarios
• Expert guest speakers
What are the programme outcomes
Successful completion of SFP benefits the participant and their institution.
The institution benefits from participants developing their financial literacy, and in doing so they are better able to contribute to strategic discussions with financial implications. Additionally, participants will share the knowledge and expertise gained through attending with others at your institution, spreading good practice and methods within faculties.
Participants will improve their financial knowledge and consolidate their understanding of financial factors and risks in decision-making.
Participants will be better equipped to make informed decisions around complex financial issues.
